Speaker 1

Welcome to the Lazy Girl Library , the podcast , where reading is a pleasure and captivating adventures happen from the comfort of your couch . I'm your host , darby , and I'm Mikayla , and if you've ever spent more time rearranging your bookshelf than your priorities , then you , my friend , are in the right place . Welcome to episode 13 , thanksgiving episode . We're so excited to be here . Welcome back . Before we get started on anything book related , let's do a little life check-in . We started this on our last episode . It's our five stars and one star , so take it away , mikayla . What has been your

5 Star and 1 Star Moments of the Week

Speaker 1

week's five star and one star ?

Speaker 2

So my one star this week let's start bad and we'll end on a good note my one star was the UCF game , watching UCFF football especially because you watched it with my husband he wasn't that bad . He wasn't that bad he's a very passionate very passionate man when it comes to football , but um no , he actually surprisingly all of us , I think were just like .

Speaker 2

It was almost like , uh , you're past the passion and it's just like sheer disappointment it was just like you , josh and him right yeah , yeah , there was the three of us just watching it and it started off great there were so many lead changes that it was just like hopeful , no , hopeful yeah by the end it was literally just silence , like we were silent . Justin got up . He's like all right guys . See ya , it was like no conversation , just that was it .

Speaker 1

That was done I like facetimed him like later that night because I was out of town this weekend , um , and yeah , he just looked like there was no life yep , yep , it was , it was not .

Speaker 2

It was not a fun game to watch .

Speaker 1

It was really frustrating it was fun to watch until the end , like the first half was pretty good yeah the second half we totally lost it .

Speaker 2

I don't know what happened there . Um , it was really frustrating because we were starting to do so well after the new quarterback was starting and he , honestly , didn't play bad . It was just a lot of just little mistakes .

Speaker 1

Special teams needs work so much work .

Speaker 2

Coaching needs work , yep , but anyway , this is not dudes on the mall go check out our husband's podcast anyway .

Speaker 1

So that was your one star , that was my one star for the week .

Speaker 2

That was just so frustrating . Yeah , um . My five star for the week , though . Um , I've been kind of like struggling with my adhd here recently , I don't . It's just been really hard for me to focus on anything . I feel like I have so much that it's like I freeze and I don't know what to work on and I end up not doing anything , which then doesn't help anything either Because then more stuff gets piled on and then you're just like in such a state of like I can't move .

Speaker 2

Yep , exactly . So that's been like kind of like the trend here for me the past couple of weeks . But my sister stopped by on sunday , just like popped in really quick . She was out running errands and she's like , hey , I picked you up something . She got me a book that's like how to like handle that and how to like work through it . And she's like , because she went to like the barnes and noble that just opened by us , um , yeah , gosh , that's so good . So , um , because she loves really close by too , so she was checking it out and so she's like I know you were , you were saying that you were having a hard time .

Speaker 2

So I saw this and I thought of you . That's so sweet . It was really sweet of her , oh my gosh . So that was my five star for the week I love that .

Speaker 1

Go abby . She's so thoughtful , that's so sweet what about you derby ? Okay , lots of five stars recently .

Speaker 1

Love it Very grateful for it A five star . That hasn't happened yet , but I'm still going to say it we have Friendsgiving on Friday . I'm hosting it for the first time , so after this podcast Michaela doesn't know , but I'm going to be asking her some questions because she hosted it in the past I'm trying to prepare , so that is coming up and I'm really excited about that . I found out this past weekend that I like orange bell peppers Ooh yeah , so that was really fun .

Speaker 1

I like grew up being a really picky eater and I'm still like picky , but I'm trying more things . This sounds like so dumb I'm 26 . But so it's so fun when I find something that I like . And so I like red onions and but I've never had them in a salad before . And I went to my older sister's this past weekend and she had made a salad that had onions in it and orange bell peppers and like other stuff , but the like onions and bell peppers . I was like , whoa , now I don't know about this like can you give me some ? That doesn't have it . But there was no way to do . That was already mixed in and I was like , okay , let me just try it . And then I really liked it . So that was just like really fun , I was like wow , I came .

Speaker 1

There's a new food for me to experience and try proud of you for trying new things .

Speaker 1

I love the good pepper , red green , whatever , yeah , I'll have to try the other ones now , but I know the orangey one I like . And then , final five star of the week is that I got to spend the weekend with my family . Like I said , I was visiting my sister . We had like a pizza night with the whole family and then I just had a really good time with my mom and dad and other sister and it was just like a good , wholesome weekend so I was really appreciative of that . Oh , that's so nice .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and then my one star for the week is , like you catch 22 , but it's just like the busyness yeah and I think we're all feeling it because of the holiday season and it's so hard because it's all so much fun , but it's just . It can just be a lot . So it's just a one star because I'm like sometimes having a hard time being present in all the things I'm doing , but I'm so excited about all the things I'm doing , sure . So , yeah , it's just like a catch-22 that I'm trying to figure out . I get that so it's not like a crazy one star , but I'm like yeah .

Speaker 2

No , it just leaves you kind of like frazzled , yeah like unsettled for the weekend too .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I guess you know I like walked in the door and spewed like three different stories to me . I was like here's what's going on .

Speaker 2

No , I always love to listen . Uh , yeah , I feel like , especially for like , because around work at by the end of the year always picks up or gets crazy trying to finish things out before the end of the year and then , like you said , with holidays and stuff , it just always gets so crazy around this time but it is fun .

Speaker 1

It is like my favorite time of the year yeah , but it's like there's so much going on and then it's gonna be over so fast .

Speaker 2

And it's like ah yeah , isn't thanksgiving like your favorite holiday too ?

Speaker 1

so this might be my favorite episode , um , because we are talking about all things like gratitude . And before we go super deep into that , just a quick reminder our book club book for this month is Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin . So if you're reading that , keep on reading it . Mikayla and I have been reading it and we've been testing out Fable , the app , and you can like put posts on each chapter that you read , so it's been so fun to like read each other's thoughts throughout the book .

Speaker 2

I've been loving it . I think that we're going to introduce it for you guys to come join our Fable Book Club here in the new year . Yes , because this is our last book for 2024 . So we won't be doing one for December .

Speaker 2

We will up back up in January because it's busy time yeah exactly , and plus holidays , being present with our families instead of having to worry about the , you know , finishing the book , nor the do a podcast on it . But we will pick back up in the new year and hopefully you'll join us on fable , because it has been really fun testing it out .

Speaker 1

Yeah , we're . We're doing the testing right now , so go ahead and read that book and you can hear us talk about that later this month . But in this episode we have a few books slash reading related discussion topics lined up to help get us in the spirit of Thanksgiving season , such as like the value of gratitude and how books remind us to be grateful , and self-reflection . So , without further to do , let's get into it , all , it all right

Gratitude Towards Reading

Speaker 1

darby .

Speaker 2

Why are you grateful for reading as part of your life ? What has it like brought you ?

Speaker 1

my gosh . I where to begin ? We're getting deep this episode . Um . So for a lot of these questions and for my notes , I it's like I had two different brains going into them , because obviously we read so much fantasy and so much fiction , but there's also a part of me that reads so much like self-help books and religious books .

Speaker 1

A lot of like great Christian authors out there that I read . So I feel like answering those questions there was always like two yeah . So I feel like sometimes you'll listen to some of my answers and they like don't make sense . But it's just because it's like . This is my answer for like the fiction books and my answer for religious but books as a whole . It's just fostered so much for me as a person . I think it's one allowed me to be a better speaker , because I think we talked about this a few episodes ago . But when I was a kid I used to like singing books or like performing books , and so I think that really helped me with public speaking .

Speaker 1

It's helped me to understand myself more and that , of course , goes into well , actually both fiction and nonfiction books . I think it's helped me to learn more about myself . It's continued my education and my creativity . I watched I used to watch the show Brain Games when I was in like middle school .

Speaker 1

I think , and they had an episode one time on creativity and they had this segment where they had like two blobs and they asked adults to come up with 23 different like , like , ideas about like what these blobs are , and they could come up with maybe five and then they told kids to do the same thing and they were like it's a mermaid , it's a dragon , it's a this , it's that , and it's the same thing as , like you know , cloud watching like finding shapes , and so we lose so much creativity as we get older .

Speaker 1

But I think books can really help with that . Um , and then , on top of everything else , it's expanded my community of friends , um , especially lately in these kind of recent years , and so that's been so fun , because , I've said before , but , um , reading books can be so intimate and personal , so it's really , I think , um , it can be really deep when you let people into certain books and like fandoms and I don't know it's really cool . Yeah , I love books .

Speaker 1

We do , we love books but are you grateful for reading as being a part of your life , and what has it brought you ?

Speaker 2

um , a lot of same sentiments , obviously , like I'm grateful for the escape that it provides me from , like the real world , um , and I'm grateful for all the many things that I learn about myself , about people in general , while reading , both from fiction and non-fiction um , so that's always something . I love learning new things I'm constantly striving to , like you know , find , even if it's just like not , it doesn't even have to be like true knowledge , like fun facts or things like that . I just love learning . I love learning stuff .

Speaker 2

So it's always fun seeing what I can like take from a book . There's always something that you can take , even from like the silly little romances , you know . But , like , the biggest thing that I'm grateful for is the privilege that we have to just be able to read get a girl because I feel like reading really is a privilege that we forget about , because we have that freedom here and we were like able to have the education to learn to read , whereas , like a lot of people around the world , especially women , aren't afforded that same privilege and opportunities . The fact that we are able to just not only know how to read but have the time to sit and leisurely read , I'm like really , really grateful for that time too .

Speaker 1

That's such a good reminder . I completely agree . It's something I don't think we think about often .

Speaker 2

So that's a great one , thanks

The Power of Shared Stories

Speaker 2

. So how do you think sharing books and stories can deepen bonds and friendships or families ?

Speaker 1

So I think it's kind of similar to like hey , this song reminded me of you , or hey , I think you'd like this movie .

Speaker 1

However , I'm definitely biased and I think , depending on the recommendation , it can have like a much deeper meaning or a deeper bond especially on like the content , which I know there's some like really deep songs and movies out there , but a book takes up so much more time and you're really engrossed in it and in instances like one time I gave a book to my younger sister that I had read that really helped me in a certain stage of my life and I thought that she was going through a similar stage and so it took the time to underline things that like really helped me and stuff . So it's just I think it can be really personal and just like so fun .

Speaker 1

But I do think it has a similar sentiment of like . This song reminded me this movie , or I think you'd really like this . It's like the deeper thought of it . I totally get that . What about you ?

Speaker 2

um , no , I totally agree .

Speaker 2

It's like sharing stories is such a vital part of our life , um , and I think like a lot of this can be traced back to like even just the time with , like cave paintings shout out spaceship , earth , because I think they talk about this like throughout the first half of the entire ride at epcot .

Speaker 2

But , uh , because it not only like sharing stories can bring connection , which is such like a vital part of our humanity , is like connecting with other humans , and so I think storytelling can really help foster that . But it also helps us learn from like past mistakes , so like even when you , like I said , when you think back to like the very beginnings of storytelling . So it's like cave paintings , it's like where to hunt , how to hunt , like what these animals look like , that are like safe or not safe , kind of thing . It's like you're always like learning from these past stories . Or with fables , you know , even though they're , like you know , fictional , fun stories , they still have morals that you're teaching young kids , that they're learning through like the fun stories and so it . And then , by doing that and like before , when you'd like sit around a campfire and like tell old stories or tell tales , like it again is like comes back to , like the human connection and like bringing people together , which I love that is so good .

Speaker 1

I loved that .

Speaker 2

I'm in my feelings today . I love it .

Speaker 1

No , but it's so true , and especially like I'm like a technology hater , like I think I'm going to get a flip phone next phone . But like before , technology and all of the sharing that we had that was so instant and quick . It was books and it was written stories and spoken stories and the you know , the folklore and the tables that you're saying .

Speaker 2

So it just I think it feels deeper too , because it just goes back so much farther than like the tiktok that they were sent , like I don't know , but I feel like even those , and I think that's why , like so many things , like tiktok , take off too , and why people love them , because it's just story time it constantly comes back to just like sharing different parts , whether it's like different parts of our lives or different , like creative ideas or something it's just sharing in the part of like these stories that helps like connect with people and like the human and emotional level , I feel like .

Speaker 1

So that's true , I take it back .

Speaker 2

It fully relates to technology but technology , paper , better technology can take away from , you're totally right . But like . That's why I think like some things . Like like , versus . Like a facebook versus a tiktok even though facebook was big for a while , I think that that kind of takes away from some of it sometimes versus like the TikTok or like a YouTube where you're seeing people and people are talking to you and telling you stories . It's like more in depth about it , I guess , kind of thing .

Speaker 1

I love reading LinkedIn stories . Those are my . I will be scrolling LinkedIn because it's like a happy place . You know , I never scrolled LinkedIn . Oh my gosh , you have to try it . It's so fun because it's typically it's a lot more happy and everything's like I got this new job or it's like this personal development post and it's like , yes , and I follow like TED Talks on there . So of course , I come across like the TED .

Speaker 2

Talks . I love TED Talks .

Speaker 1

Yeah , so try listening to some stories on LinkedIn .

Speaker 2

I will check it out .

Speaker 1

That's so funny . I had to delete the app off my phone because I was going on it too much .

Speaker 2

So now I only check it on my laptop . I would have never thought LinkedIn would be like such an addictive social media .

Speaker 1

Oh , I can get sucked into anything . That's so funny . That's so funny . Okay , is there a book that someone shared ?

Speaker 2

with you that made you feel particularly connected to them . So I love giving books to other people . I think , just like what you mentioned , like books bond people , I love finding ones that will connect with other people . That's like my Christmas thing is I , along with like whatever gift I give people , I try to like give them a book that I think that they would really enjoy , um , because I think that it does help you connect with somebody on a personal level . In that regard , for me , receiving books , um , there are like way too many growing up that I like could mention like there's , there's a lot of them , like because my mom used to read to me , my grandma was really into reading like there's just like a lot of personal books that I've received or that we had like a special connection with between them . Yeah , um , that's kind of too hard for me like to pick from them .

Speaker 2

So I'm gonna do the most recent one , which is akatar . Love it , because that was a huge book for me that you shared with me . So not only did like I find connection with the characters in the story . That was like obviously , just like so well written . That's why it's our favorite . It's popular for a reason it is . It's popular for a reason . Sarah J Maas is a brilliant mind , so not only did it like help me , like connect in that way and like recognize things about myself through some of the characters and what they're going through , through some of the characters and what they're going through , but it also sparked my joy of reading again , which I'm so , so grateful for you for . Thank you for bringing me into the act , our world , to spark my love of reading again okay , give me five minutes while I go cry in the bathroom no I love that .

Speaker 1

What about you ? Um , okay , so I interpreted this in like two ways of so like a book that someone shared with me that made me feel connected to the person , and then a book that someone shared with me that made me feel connected to the book . So , in regards to like people , again , I feel like growing up , reading was more of just like a solo kind of personal thing , like my only connection was with my middle school librarian and I was like , okay , what do you got for me next ?

Speaker 1

love that um , but in high school I've mentioned the selection series before and that one I really felt connected to the girl who recommended it , because that was a time where I was exploring like certain types of books in the genre that I just I didn't have a lot of knowledge of and I just felt like her and I were on the same like level of like liking the same things , and so after that I was like what are you reading next ? What are you reading next , like tell me ? So I felt really connected to her through that , um , and then also the book kind of more recently when I was in grad school . It's called is it just me ? And this one was a like Christian self-help book that I read with my grad school roomie Shelby , and we would each read like the chapter and we would read it together Like I'm talking like out loud popcorn style , Like we're sitting on the couch reading it , and we would talk about each chapter , and so that was just like a really special like shared time between us .

Speaker 1

So that one like obviously really bonded me to her um and that book . And then I just want to talk about this book , because someone didn't share this with me . Someone shared this author with me , but not this book . Yeah , but a book that I felt really connected to the content was , um , well , of course , throne of Glass , and then also Everybody Always , which is by Bob Goff , and that author was shared to me , um , by a church friend and it was just great , it was so good , made me feel so happy yeah , you talk about that one a lot .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I need to read it .

Speaker 1

I really like that one .

The Restorative Powers of Reading

Speaker 1

It's a good one . What do you think makes a book healing or restorative to read ?

Speaker 2

okay . So again , I don't know what I was thinking when I was like writing up my little notes , but I love this little blurb I wrote . I love books that crack open your walls and breathe life into your vulnerabilities . Yeah , that's what is like the most I feel like you're preaching right now .

Speaker 2

That's the most like healing , restorative read for me for fiction . What that looks like , or what I've found that that looks like , is books that I can see myself in . The characters , um , especially those are like struggling with similar things that I am , so then it's kind of like when they get resolved , you almost feel like it's resolved in you too , or it gives you almost like a sense of hope that it can be resolved , and so it kind of like opens that up . The perfect example for me was like nesta and , uh , of course , silver flames .

Speaker 2

Um , I just really connected with her character and a lot of like the struggles that she goes through or like personality type kind of situations , and so like watching her grow from that and like her story , I had like a really deep like connection to that . So that was like a restorative read for me . Fiction wise , um , or just books that make you just like uncontrollably sob , like I really want to talk about the book that we're going to talk about next podcast . But we'll talk about next podcast . I don't think I've gotten that far in the book yet , my lips are sealed . So , but for non-fiction books , um , I love like books that open my eyes to new ways of thinking . I think that's the most like restorative read for me . Um , it's like expanding my understanding of how people think , like how we feel things , um recognizing different life patterns . Things like that are just like really eye-opening and make me leave the book feeling just like I don't know , at peace or like yeah , more understanding .

Speaker 2

I'm always , like I said , this is the knowledge thing for me .

Speaker 1

The more knowledge I have , the more like I feel like grounded , I guess and it's like your heart feels full like your heart feels full , your brain feels full , but at the same time , you feel just at right yeah , yes , those are like my restorative . I just like .

Speaker 2

I love a good epiphany moment like those . Like when you're reading , you're just like oh my gosh . Yes , yeah , those are , those are mine .

Speaker 1

That's good for me . Um with fiction , I think , the art of escapism while not dulling your mind .

Speaker 1

Like books allow you to step out of reality . In such a busy season Like you can be , I could be in this busy season , but as soon as I open up the pages , it's like I'm somewhere else and like everything , literally just like the world turns down , which is so cool , and I don't even think like songs or movies or shows can do that for you , because you can do other things while listening or watching , but you can't do other things while you're reading a book , right , and so it's like you're like escaping from reality and it's like your brain is , it feels , turned off , but it's not . It's still stimulating your brain .

Speaker 2

It's like simplified but completely complex at the same time yeah , and then for more non-fiction books .

Speaker 1

Those can also bring me personally such healing and comfort and it's nice to hear of an author's personal story that maybe you can relate to . Just another um , another way of feeling like you're not alone , right or like someone understands me . That's so , that's so nice , and I think that's what everyone is striving for is to just like feel understood and to feel like loved and um , so I really like books that make you feel that way it's the human connection .

Speaker 2

Yeah ,

Books We're Grateful For

Speaker 2

um , what books have made you feel like especially grateful this year ?

Speaker 1

Okay , well , we wrote the same thing . Love it Because I see it . Let's talk about it . The Nightingale Hands down this book , pulled at every single heartstring . If you did not listen to this episode of us talking about it , or if you haven't read the book , read the book . Even if you don't listen to our podcast talking about it .

Speaker 2

Read the book I honestly think this is my top read for the year yeah , it was just .

Speaker 1

It was real and raw and powerful . I was so immersed and engulfed and felt so much empathy for , like , the real people who lived and died during that time like if I think about it , I will cry so like it was just so good it , it was so , so good .

Speaker 2

No , I totally agree . I felt this book like deep in my soul . It's left like a forever impact on me and it just like makes you feel grateful for not only like the freedoms that we have like in 2024 versus like back in World War II , but like also how far we've come as like an accepting society as far as , like I know , we have a lot of issues that we're still going through , but when you can really look at it and you compare in time frames , like we have come a far way and I don't think people give us enough credit for that , not to take away from work that can still be done , but if you take a second to just look back , like To celebrate the wins Exactly .

Speaker 1

Celebrating the wins doesn't diminish the work still to be done .

Speaker 2

Wins Exactly Celebrating the wins doesn't diminish the work still to be done ? Yeah , absolutely . And so it made me feel really like grateful for that while I was reading it , but also grateful for , like , the women who were brave enough to not be bystanders during that time , like no matter how involved you were . It was like some level of like fighting the good fight for the right cause , like some level of like fighting the good fight for the right cause , and I can't even imagine like where we'd be at if they didn't have the courage to do that , because they did have such a huge impact that they didn't get enough credit for I feel like in the war , obviously not to take away from the actual soldiers that are on the front lines , but there's more than just the front lines in war .

Speaker 2

So there's stuff happening everywhere , so it's cool to hear from that perspective and reading it it was like the grinch the heart grew like three sides I didn't even know my heart was small , but then , reading that , I've just felt so much like fuller and yes , it's like one of those books that just like changes you for the better after you read . You can never go back after . Oh , so good

Writing Literary Thank You Letters

Speaker 2

so so good um , so if you would write a thank you letter to a character , author , or even like a book itself , what would it say ?

Speaker 1

okay , love this . It was so hard to pick from these , and so I want to thank probably everyone . Well , no , not everyone . I've read some people . I would say I wish I hadn't read this , but it was hard to choose For characters from the Throne of Glass realm , elide and Irene .

Speaker 1

Both of those characters I'd like to send a thank you letter to Just such pure hearts and a desire to give and help but , also persevering through some really tough times , but both of them , just like , no matter what their history was , it's like they didn't even let that thought come . Like they I'm trying to think the words they didn't even let the thought of doubt come into their mind .

Speaker 1

That they couldn't have an impact or help in some way , like it was just really cool and I'd like to think that I relate to them and just like a desire to give , so I just would like thank them that those would be my characters for an author . I just talked about him , bob Goff . I feel like he's like another grandpa in my life and I feel he's taught me some really valuable lessons on how to love like Jesus , so I would definitely write him a letter and say thank you for the life you've lived and for sharing about it .

Speaker 1

Um , and then for a book . I don't care if it's mainstream or popular , it's ACOTAR , because without it I wouldn't be sitting on this couch talking to Michaela and talking to all of you guys on this podcast right now .

Speaker 2

It's so true that one really just like sparked everything for us .

Speaker 1

And we've read some great books since Akatar too . But you know , we thank our foundation for getting us back into the world of romanticy .

Speaker 2

Yes .

Speaker 1

What about you ?

Speaker 2

So my first instinct was literally everything Sarah J Maas no surprise there , uh , but I wanted to challenge myself to like think outside of that and outside of her worlds . Um , because we're always talking about them and I will forever go to it . It is . They're so phenomenal . Like you said , with actar being our foundation , there's so many characters that I truly connected with , or just her in general , to like for building these worlds . So , but if I'm gonna , I'm gonna take myself out of that because I feel like that's just such an easy comfort zone . Yeah , um . So I would write a letter to the character clementine from the book clementine by sarah pennypacker . Um , she was the first . It was like it's like a children's book , think like jenny b jones kind of thing , but she was the first character I ever truly saw myself in as a child and I think that I like connected with on a much deeper level . That helped like my reading journey , like be what it was and like continue wanting to read . So I would write my thank you letter to her for doing that .

Speaker 1

Okay , wait , that's cute .

Speaker 2

Oh , there's so many people to thank , I know right , I haven't really thought about it . I mean , there's so many things that you could be , because there are so many things that like books can do to be grateful for and like stories are authors . But yeah , I think that's like kind of where I want to say that's like the start of my reading journey . It really wasn't , but I think that's the start of my individualized reading journey , so I'd love to go back and thank her for that .

What We Appreciate Most About Being a Reader

Speaker 2

Um , so what do you personally appreciate most about being a reader ?

Speaker 1

I think it's that I appreciate the vast worlds and lives that I get to live as each character . Um , because it's just like I feel so immersed in a lot of books that I read and you put yourself in the shoes of who you're reading .

Speaker 2

Because it opens so many worlds to you .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and a lot of times the perspective of the book like reads as if , like , you're that person . And then also nonfiction wise but kind of fiction as well . I appreciate the desire for growth and further personal development . For growth and further personal development , when you're reading a book that isn't necessarily like for funsies , um , I feel like sometimes it just like hits different and it just makes me feel proud of myself to read those books .

Speaker 2

yeah , yeah those are good what about you ?

Speaker 2

um , so I appreciate the endless supply of knowledge and creativity that books provide . Um , it's so endless . It's absolutely like you can find anything , whether you want to learn about something new , you want to escape into a new world , you want to find connection , whether it be with , like a story , or with somebody else that you're sharing that story with , even if , like for me , I use it as a mood reader , like feeling a certain emotion . Yes , definitely Like when I'm like in a sad girl moment and I want to cry . Like I use it as a mood reader , like feeling a certain emotion . Yes , definitely Like , when I'm like in a sad girl moment and I want to cry .

Speaker 2

Like I try to find those books that are just like you know are going to be like deep and emotional and get that feeling out , because it almost helps you like feel your emotions when your body kind of like won't let you . Yeah , like get them out in a new way , or even just like the , simply be entertained , because obviously they are like a form of entertainment , so satisfying . Yeah , absolutely , so you can just find it all in a book , and I really appreciate that . About like being a reader itself yeah , that's awesome , so kind of getting away

Food, Festive Fun, and Thanksgiving Traditions!

Speaker 2

from books . But still on the thanksgiving topic , let's talk about thanksgiving traditions . What do you do ?

Speaker 1

okay , so for family definitely watching the thanksgiving day parade with my love family , which is gonna be a little . This thanksgiving's gonna be a little different because it's first time with fralix , so that'll be fun .

Speaker 1

We're going up to georgia , but , um , for my past 26 years it's been watching the thanksgiving day parade , which I'm excited to do with my in-laws as well , and then also getting out the Christmas decorations , because we are definitely a Christmas after Thanksgiving . So getting out the Christmas decorations and just turning the house into like winter wonderland , especially as my parents get older um , I think they rely on me a lot , so it's when I go down there it's fun , but it's gonna sound not fun because it's like I have a system and I'm like it's gonna get done before I leave . Like I'm going to transform this house in 24 hours so my parents can like enjoy the winter time , right , and I'm gonna do that .

Speaker 2

I'm gonna make it happen . That's so nice .

Speaker 1

I really love those traditions , a personal tradition that I've kind of started . So back in in 2020 , I started this Instagram story series called Thankful Times with Derbs , because during that time there was a lot of , obviously , darkness and stuff and I just thought it would be nice to each day think about something that we're grateful for , and so I posted all the questions that I'd asked myself and I made it open to like my followers . I'm like an influencer , but I think it really did help people , especially that first year , and just help people with a perspective , and so I did that for a couple of years . And this year I'm doing something different and it's called November Notes of Appreciation . So every day in the month of November I've been writing a letter to someone that I'm grateful for and then I've mailed it to them . So that's been really fun .

Speaker 2

I love that .

Speaker 1

So it's kind of like a November tradition of just always wanting to like give back during this time or just really focus on Thanksgiving and gratitude . And there is so much to be thankful for , like we just said , the fact that we can read , we can write , we're sitting on a couch and cozy blankets , not fearing for our lives .

Speaker 1

You know , so I definitely like feel so sentimental during this time and love to just share that , and you know we should be grateful throughout the year , but it's just it's so easy for me to feel grateful during November absolutely .

Speaker 2

Yeah , it's something that we really lose sight of , and I think there's a lot of focus that gets thrown on to , um , like the food of the holidays , but especially Christmas . Christmas keeps creeping up closer and closer and closer . That Thanksgiving is always forgotten about , but it is something that we need to be better about , like taking the time to truly be thankful for what we do have , because we are so blessed in this life .

Speaker 2

Yeah , so , absolutely , I love thankful time with derbs what traditions thanksgiving traditions are you are your favorite so we don't have a whole lot of thanksgiving traditions , but we do always watch macy's thanksgiving day parade . That was huge growing up , um , and so we watched that every year ever since coming to college and I haven't been going home as much for thanksgiving . Typically I spend it with josh's family . Um , I don't get to watch that with my family as much anymore , but what I have started doing my grandma lives by herself and a lot of times my aunt and uncle will go up and like bring her down for thanksgiving , um , but not to like later , so I will facetime her in the morning and we watch the thanksgiving day parade together , like over facetime , so as like a way to just like connect with her being like by herself during that time . So , uh , yeah , that's been nice and being able to do that , um .

Speaker 2

The other big thing that we used to do is I used to always help my mom in the kitchen . It always started small , like when I was little , and then it like worked up and to where like now , anytime we're together or it's not now , because I haven't been home for thanksgiving in a little bit but uh , she would like start teaching me how to do things more , so that way , whenever , like , I'm the one that's hosting thanksgiving , like I'll know what to do and kind of like teaching me the ways and like traditions and how we do stuff , because she does everything like homemade from scratch so , um , that was always fun .

Speaker 1

I will be facetiming my mom on friday to help me with the turkey she let me bring up , like what we use for Thanksgiving , our turkey tray , and because my sister's going to come , so we're going to send it back and it's going to be an adventure .

Speaker 2

It's going to be great .

Speaker 1

It's going to be an adventure You're going to do great . That's so sweet .

Speaker 2

I have a couple of questions that we didn't actually write about , but that my head as we were talking . What is your favorite and least favorite dish for thanksgiving ? Um , the thanksgiving meal is my absolute favorite meal of the entire year , so good , I like forget that I could just make stuffing whenever I want right now , but it doesn't feel right .

Speaker 2

I can't have stuffing in may exactly it's like that and plus I kind of feel like it's like that special time where you just like really look forward to it , that's what makes it special ? Exactly .

Speaker 1

Once a year .

Speaker 2

Yes , so I just love Thanksgiving meal as a whole . That's my favorite meal , especially with my mom's cooking , and I am looking forward to going back home again , hopefully next year , for Thanksgiving dinner . But oh , it's so hard to pick a favorite . I can tell you my least favorite . I'm not a sweet potato girl .

Speaker 1

I know to pick a favorite . I can tell you my least favorite . I'm not a sweet potato girl , I know , but I'm not a big sweet potato casserole fan , like it's too sweet for me , but like , give me straight up sweet potato , love it it's uh it .

Speaker 2

It's not that I can't eat it like I can , but that's the thing . It's just too sweet for me , it's not . I'm not a fan if it's given to me . It's one of those who's that if it's given to me , like , I'll eat it , but if it's like a buffet style , like I'm not picking it up , kind of thing , um , but I am the outlier in my family for that , because the rest of my family loves sweet potatoes , especially my sister and my dad . That's like their favorite thing in the world . Um , but yeah , that it's a little too sweet for me . Um , but my favorite , oh , it's all so good , I'd say my mom's mashed potatoes . My mom kills the mashed potato game . She gets some nice and creamy and like the perfect consistency where they're not too like runny but they're not like chunky . Yeah , it's like a good kind of like , you know , with a blizzard when you like flip it over and it doesn't like come out of the cup like , oh , my god , that was like a perfect consistency that's good .

Speaker 1

That's good . Yes , I love those . What about you ? For me , so I would say , my least favorite , I don't know if this hot take , but it would probably be mac and cheese , a lot of homemade mac and cheese with like the roux and stuff that people make too rich . Yeah , like way too way too rich and cheesy and it's like I need like less cheese , almost like less is more I totally guess um .

Speaker 1

So that was my first instinct . I will say , though , as a picky eater , I've never tried like cranberries , like the I'm gonna bring it for friendsgiving because that is one I have very .

Speaker 2

I have a very specific recipe that my mom makes .

Speaker 1

It's really easy , but that is one thing that like I'll just pull out the fridge and eat straight out of the bowl , like I love well , my family was like the canned ones too oh no , we did like I never tried it because obviously I'm like we just poured it out of a can and it still has the shape , so I don't know about that yeah , I wouldn't know about that one either um , stuffing is probably my favorite , but you're right , all the food is just so good and I'm the type of person so I know people will make like sandwiches after Thanksgiving with the leftover stuff .

Speaker 1

I'm a person day of I'm using those biscuits , the croissant , whatever type of like bread we have , and I'm making a sandwich right there on the spot and I'm putting everything on there the mashed potato that's going on there as if it was a condiment , like the mac and cheese , the green beans , like turkey . It's all going to the biscuit .

Speaker 1

I love it and my family , like my grandparents and cousins , used to make fun of me because they would be like there's her sandwich . Is Darby made her sandwich and I , I do . I love my sandwiches , my thanksgiving sandwiches .

Speaker 2

They're so good yeah , no , I love stuffing too . I'm a big turkey fan . I know a lot of people aren't .

Speaker 1

That's my preferred deli meat , me too , turkey I love turkey I know boar said is going through its um like glyceria crisis right now . But whenever that's passed , boar's head slow smoke , pit craft turkey game changer so good I'm a fan of the mesquite .

Speaker 2

That's kind of like that's always my go-to .

Speaker 1

But I will give that a shot because I just love turkey what book character that we've read this year do you think would love thanksgiving and hate Thanksgiving ? And I like I think , well , this isn't this year , but obviously like the night court , like they'd have a wonderful Thanksgiving together . There would be no animosity there .

Speaker 2

Right .

Speaker 1

But then , like I don't know , it'd be so interesting for some of the books we've read this year . Like does Adeline hate Thanksgiving ? Like because it makes her think of her family and she can't have it ? Or can she go into so many different places and have different meat ? Like ?

Speaker 2

I don't know Right . Ooh interesting . Do you have any immediate thoughts ? My immediate thought was less about who would hate Thanksgiving and who I would hate to have Thanksgiving with , and that would be Frankie from the World's .

Speaker 1

Best man .

Speaker 2

Throwback I would hate to have Thanksgiving with and that would be Frankie from the worst misbehave throwback , but I would not . Yeah , no , that was just my initial thought . Um , who would not like Thanksgiving ?

Speaker 1

I think maybe from the the Firebird trilogy . I feel like they'd want to like Thanksgiving , but I feel like they wouldn't because they'd have some sort of like science thing they were trying to do or like .

Speaker 2

Maybe , yeah . I was thinking like Hunt from Crescent City might not like all of the like gatherings and like the pressure of like being with so many people .

Speaker 1

maybe , yeah that's a good one .

Speaker 2

I don't know , that's harder . My other thought , too , was potentially Amarin . I feel like she's one of those that comes for a bit , eats a little and then just would dip kind of thing .

Speaker 1

But then Cassian from A Court of Thorns would love he loves Thanksgiving . He's ready to go play flag football in the front .

Speaker 2

Love he loves Thanksgiving , he's ready to go play flag football in the front yard , favorite holiday right there . He loves it , totally agree . That's a good question .

Borrows & Returns

Speaker 2

Do we want to get into Barhows and Returns ?

Speaker 1

Yes , yes , we do . All right , darby . What are we reading Currently ? We are only reading Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow . So , working my way through that , it's not my . I will save most of my thoughts . Well , I'll save all my thoughts for our next book , but it's paced differently than a lot of books that I normally read . So , I like going into it . New that I wasn't going to breeze through it .

Speaker 1

So I'll just leave it at that . Then you can listen to the next episode for more thoughts when I finish it . But I'm reading that right now . And then I listen to audiobooks on Spotify most of the time . So I was reading Powerful . I literally have , I think , like 45 minutes left and now I can't , like I ran out of Spotify listening hours and they want me to buy those extra hours , but I'll be waiting 12 days before I finish the book . But I basically finished that one . So I'm reading Powerful , which is the novella for the Powerless trilogy by I think it's Lauren . Oh , what's her last name ? Is it Lauren Roberts ? That's what I want to say . I think so .

Speaker 1

And then for returns , I finished Part of your World by Abby Jimenez , and then Legendary by I think this one is Stephanie Garber , and so I'm really excited to finish the third book in that Carvel series . And then I found out that there's another series that like has one of the characters that I like in it . So I'm excited to read that one too . But both my returns were four stars Great books , really enjoyed them , love that . So yeah , that one too . But both my returns were four stars Great books , really enjoyed them , love that . So , yeah , that's me . What are you borrowing and returning ?

Speaker 2

So I am reading Tomorrow , tomorrow , tomorrow . I am so looking forward to talking about this book . I have not finished and I'm not going to say anything , but I'm so looking forward to talking about this book . Yay , that was the only book I was reading until today . I did start on audio Tuesdays with Maury .

Speaker 1

I read that in high school . Oh my gosh , I love Tuesdays with Maury .

Speaker 2

Yes , I remember you saying that and it popped up on my Goodreads a while ago and then today because I just finished my other audiobook . So typically I listen to them on my commutes or like during my like lunch hour , yeah , um . So I was trying to think of like a good , like thanksgiving , like feel good kind of book , and so then I found that one , so I decided to start that one niche album books are good , like quick easy reads yeah , I'm gonna .

Speaker 1

I'm definitely gonna check them out after this , because I'm like I will say this this one's my favorite , but I haven't read a ton .

Speaker 2

I've only read like two or three other ones besides this one , but this one is the best one , yeah , so good , I'm only like 17% the way through it , obviously because I just started it today , but already like tearing up while reading , oh yeah , so I know it was like this was exactly what I was looking for . Good , so , um . So I did start that one , and then , after I finish her book club book , I am going to be hopping back into the harry potter world with the sixth book , the half-blood prince , so that will be coming here soon too not surprising .

Speaker 1

Yep , I'm so glad you're loving them .

Speaker 2

I am , oh my gosh , so good . That's all of my return . Well , actually , no , I have enough . I have two , two Harry Potters in my returns Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix , both five stars for me .

Speaker 2

Loved them , I loved , I think . And Goblet of Fire , I just loved the pacing of it and it like really kept me on my seat Because , again , even though I kind of know what's going on and how it's going to end and like the big plot points , I forget all the details in between . So it really kept me engaged . And then , um , order of the phoenix was , ironically , one of those books that while you're reading it you feel like so angry at the characters , but it's still a five star because you it's like written so well , that's good , you know like what I'm talking about . So like , even though it's like negative emotions while you're reading it , it's like positive that you're feeling them , because it's just like it A is like adding more character depth to a lot of these characters , yeah , and they're going through like more complex things . It's not like so black and white kind of , so you kind of have handled it , or certain things like that . So it gets you really worked up and really into the book . So both five stars .

Speaker 2

But then my other return , the audiobook that I just finished that I think you would really enjoy . It's called Disney High the Untold Story of the Rise and Fall of Disney Channel's Tween Empire . I absolutely love that . By Ashley Spencer . I forgot I was reading this during . By Ashley Spencer . I forgot I was reading this during your last episode so I forgot to add it to my barist returns then . But this was another five star for me . Oh my gosh , it was so entertaining , oh good . Like she , each chapter is over a different like Disney Channel movie or TV show and it starts around like steven's time frame , okay and ends on like camp rock . So it's like that like I felt like it was made for me . It was that perfect sweet spot of when I was watching disney channel . And not only does she get into like the behind the scenes drama between like hillary duff and like her co-star and how does she know these things ?

Speaker 2

a lot of interviews with people . Okay , yeah , no , it's like more . It's very credible because it's either she's pulling from previous interviews that these stars or these people have done or she held a lot of interviews with , like producers and um screenwriters and things like that from these shows , and so it was like really interesting like hearing about like all the behind the scenes drama from these people , but then also the business side of it , because it not only goes into like the details of the show , but like the business side of disney channel as a whole and like how it really started and then how it like grew into like what it is known as today . So it's really fascinating to hear . So really really recommend all five star returns for me .

Speaker 1

Loved so good that is so good . I love that . That makes me happy . So that's our borrows , and returns , and returns . That's our thanksgiving episode , and I think it would be nice with just ending by saying I'm grateful for you , michaela as am I for you , darby , thank . I'm grateful to everyone who is listening right now or if you've ever listened . I'm grateful for people who will never listen , because I'm grateful for everyone .
