Speaker 1Be really cool . Thanks for tuning in , guys . We're so excited to have you .
Speaker 2Welcome back to another Lazy Girl Library episode . If you couldn't tell from my little intro , we are talking about women . This episode is dedicated to women in honor of International Women's Day that was on March 8th and Women's History Month . So fun , exciting for the girls today .
Speaker 1Oh yeah , and guys , boys , if you're joining us , I hope you learned something . Join the girlhood . Yeah Well , let's do a little check-in . What are our five-star and one-star for the week , month , day ?
Speaker 2So my five-star happened on International Women's Day . I had my bridal shower . Yeah , she did . She was so pretty . Thanks , so that was really fun . My mom and my aunt like co-hosted together at my aunt's house and they did like a whole Bridgerton theme . It was a complete surprise for me and they did like a whole bridgerton theme . It was a complete surprise for me . So I just showed up and they had like tea sets set up from like my grandma's like china collection . They were gorgeous . Yes , it was really cool . Like they see it all pulled out and like had little like lunch kind of nibble things and some desserts and cakes and cookies and just showered with love . And , on theme for the podcast , everybody gifted me a book or book themed gift .
Speaker 1It was so cute . When I read that on the invite I was like this is perfect this is great .
Speaker 2Yeah , that was perfect amazing . I loved it . So many cool books , different , like cookbooks .
Speaker 1You got this one hosting book or dinner party book . I'm obsessed . I literally like we're in the middle of taking pictures and I was like , can I go ? Look at this book ? I was like , just by myself , like combing through all your things . They were so good , yeah it was so cool .
Speaker 2Yeah , that was a really cool one . My sister got me like a like go to like how to massage correctly like book , which is cool .
Speaker 1She meant that for Josh . Let me knowosh you need someone to test it on .
Speaker 2You get lots of fun reads , so excited to jump into those , um , but it was overall just a really great day . That's awesome , had such a fun time . It's kind of like this , like the true start of like everything , because now we're like we're getting real close , like the , the festivities have begun for this wedding and I don't know we're gonna come together and be great . I'm like so excited and so stressed all at the same time , so we're just running on adrenaline , basically you ride that roller coaster .
Speaker 2So that was my five star . My one star kind of related I ordered a dress for the bridal shower and a dress for the rehearsal . That I thought like months ago I ordered it back in January Still has yet to come in .
Speaker 2So , I've been like in contact with the company . They're just having like a lot of delays or whatever , which is really annoying , but didn't come in in time , so that was really frustrating , despite the fact that I ordered it well in advance . So but that was kind of like a on the grander scheme of things , an easy one star . It was just kind of like a moment , but still it's a bummer .
Speaker 1We can accept the fact that it's a one star .
Speaker 2Yeah , what about you , darby ?
Speaker 1Okay , so I'll start with the low and with the high . So my one star is that my stomach has been hurting the past couple of days . But you know what they say hot girls have tummy issues . So I guess I'm just getting hotter this week just blushing it all out yeah .
Speaker 1So , um , yeah , tummy problems are my one star , and then my five star is probably that my dog turned two on friday . Happy birthday , bogey . Happy birthday bogey . So we got her like a cake and it was , um , like a dog cake and it had like little bones with like sprinkles on them that like made the border and it was pink and then we literally put candles in it . She was so afraid of the candles , like we tried to put it closer to her to sing to her and she like ran away and we were like we're trying to get a cute video . Um , yeah , it was cute . Um , she does have like this little like dog disease right now she's okay , but , um , so she can't be around other dogs because she's like contagious . So that was the only bummer about her birthday . But we got to take her on like a long trail walk and she loved it , so it was a good birthday for her good way to celebrate together .
Speaker 1Yeah , the picture you got of her with the cake so cute she also looked sad in those pictures because I don't think she knew that she could eat the cake so it was so funny she looks . She looks like really sad because she's not eating it .
Speaker 2But yeah , I think she did you enjoy it after like , when she like ?
Speaker 1oh yeah , she was like it was so interesting she didn't really know like how to eat it or how to like tackle it , and so she was licking it at first , like licking everything , and then she like licked one of like the milk bones off like the border , and then she ate that , and then I think somehow she got like a little bit of like . There was like this I don't know if it was , it looked like icing , but I'm sure it was something for dogs like , maybe some type of like frozen , like yogurt or something . But she got part of that off and so then she was like eating just that , and then she got to like the cake part , um , whatever that was . But so it was just interesting that she was eating it in like pieces . Yeah , because even after she learned that she could bite into it , she was still like dissecting it almost right . So I don't know if that's a dog thing or just a bogey thing , but we thought that was really funny .
Speaker 2We love a methodical queen , yeah , so particular .
Speaker 1But so that was my five star and one star my life check-in . I love it .
Speaker 2I love happy birthday , bogey . We love a good celebration yeah , lots of celebrations this .
Speaker 1Yeah , before we get into our episode for today , I just want to say a reminder that our book for this month is the Women how Fitting by Kristen Hanna , so make sure to join us on Fable to read along with us . We love Kristen Hanna on this podcast Obsessed , and I'm ready for my heart to be torn out and put through a shredder and then stomped on . So that's about right . Yeah , yep that .
Speaker 2That about covers it . Yeah , um , but yeah , join us on fable at lazy girl library . But this episode all about women discussing our favorite women characters , authors , creators , etc . And women who inspire us . So let's go girls , um , all right . So , starting in the literary space , who is your favorite female protagonist in a book and what makes her stand out ?
Speaker 1okay , we both said the same person because she's phenomenal she is love alen .
Speaker 1Yes , and it's incredible from throne of glass yes , from third of glass , which is an arguably like perfect series , um , but basically I love her because for a lot of female main characters , I feel like they have like a crutch of like needing to depend on someone . Like they , even if they are like um , like spunky and like independent independent , they still rely on people . And though Ailyn does rely on a lot of people , I think she doesn't need to depend on anyone and though she doesn't depend on anyone , she cares for everyone . She's really selfless , but at the same time , she knows when to fill her cup up . So I just think she's really selfless , but at the same time , she knows when to fill her cup up .
Speaker 1So , I just think she's like very mature , she's so like smart .
Speaker 2Yes .
Speaker 1She's always got a plan , true mastermind , yeah , yeah . So I know you have notes too , but those are just some of the things about . Ailyn , that I love her .
Speaker 2No , completely agree . I also really love like her faults and her flaws that I think are written so perfectly , because I think that , like , by showing that and how she's like knows that she's not perfect in the slightest and makes all these mistakes , but it never stops her from trying and like giving her all for the people that she loves , yeah , um , so I think that just adds like a realness to her . That's really relatable . Um , because it's like the trials that she goes through kind of thing .
Speaker 2Otherwise it'd be like too easy , she's too perfect .
Speaker 1Yeah , yeah , I think it's kind of like the opposite spectrum of like . So she doesn't depend on anyone and it's almost like the outside people are like but we want you to let us in on the plan , like we want you to know that you care for us and we care for you just as much , which I think is sometimes things that I think just in real life , people need to know absolutely , yeah , it's so real , um , and she just embodies everything that I love and want from like a female main character .
Speaker 2Um , yeah , and her ultimate mastermind , like , oh , the way her brain works . I love it . But I also love too how she can go from like being badass warrior who to like still embracing her femininity and like loving , like pretty dresses and the glitz and the glam and just like curling up with a good book . Yes , because you don't need to choose exactly , yeah , you can be .
Speaker 1yeah , oh my gosh , I love that . Yes , I feel I very much relate to that , because I'm someone who loves to be girly and stuff , and then I'm someone who loves to drink a beer .
Speaker 2Well , and you're so sporty too , you can get out there and you can get down with the boys too , Dudes and derbs .
Speaker 1Dudes and derbs I have worn that phrase into like the ground , but yeah , but you don't have to be like put in a box . I think that's another thing , especially for girls . It's like you have to fit into like one category and it's like you don't . I told actually my co-workers today that I'm like a hobby hopper . I love to try different hobbies but I'm not like locked in on any of them , so I'm mediocre at a lot of things . I'm just not good at anything , jack of all trades , but anyway , kind of like Ailyn , like she's doing it all , like she's just trying .
Speaker 2Yeah , no , I think she's one of those characters that's like so well developed that I feel like every woman can find something to relate to in her yeah , what do you relate to ?
Speaker 2most in her oh , probably the asking for help , honestly , and that fault because I take so much on myself for sure you know it's not that I and it's one of those things that I think with ayla is like you know that other people are willing to help you but you don't want to put that , the burden of what you're going through on somebody else , because it's yours to care , that you want to like take care of . You don't want them to go through it , but it's like that .
Speaker 1They want to help , I know , but that's why it's like such an eye-opening , so it's great .
Speaker 2And then having her have a lot of these like faults and things , um , for you to see yourself in , that it like helps you , like realize and like take those messages back and being like it's okay to have , like that's why it's like it takes a village for everything , and to like to really utilize that and like it's okay , yeah . So yeah , what about you ? What do you think is like ?
Speaker 1the what I said before , like how , oh yeah ? Yeah if you rewind , so engrossed in what you're saying that I didn't even realize you answered your own question no , you're good , you're good .
Speaker 2um , I do also want to give honorable mentions to Manon , also from Throne of Glass , and Nesta from A Court of Thrones and Roses . She's my girl and I love them both . I think they're also really amazing women , characters that again have their faults and their flaws , but then also the way they work through them . So those are kind of my honorable mentions .
Speaker 1I'll give an honorable mention . Addy larue is an honorable mention and then basically any female main character by emily , henry or abby jimenez yes , she does those girls well or they do those girls well just love a good , a good written fmc .
Speaker 2Yeah , yeah , um , so what is a book written by a woman that changed your perspective on something ?
Speaker 1Speaking of Addie LaRue , I'm going to go with the Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by Victoria E Schwab . We read this as a book talk a while back , so if you haven't listened to it , listen to it , because I feel like we had lots of thoughts and it was a really fun discussion . But I think the like where it changed my perspective is just kind of like on life , you know , there you always feel like something's missing , or if I could only change this one thing , or if I could remove this one thing from my life , then it would be so much better . But , as you see in the book , when they're just like please don't let this happen , or like please let this happen , just trying to change their life to make it better , it essentially makes it way way worse . If your life is already great , like you know , take a look around and take in , like the things that you're grateful for and what does fill your cup up and how you are loved by certain individuals .
Speaker 2Yeah , no , that's so good that actually I saw a TikTok today of a woman talking about a TikTok . She saw TikTok conception Exactly . But basically about this , this 80 year old woman whose like biggest advice was don't win your life away , and so it's like so good . Her , like her whole story , is like um , when I have kids , then I'll be happy , when I'm married , then I'll be happy when I have grandkids , and so , and then she just that , and now she's 80 and realized that like it's happiness isn't like the destination , it's like the journey and to try to like , wait for and like that's when things are going to get better , then you're always going to be moving that dial forward . You're never going to reach that .
Speaker 1It's so true . I think a lot of our baby boomer parents are recognizing that , with , you know , retiring and saying like I'll do it when I'm retired , and then there are some things that they can't do because of their bodies . You know , so true . It's just you have to do things now . It's not guaranteed .
Speaker 2Yeah , that was a great choice . Thanks , good pick . Tell me yours , mine is the Nightingale by Kristen Hanna . I almost said the same one are you guys ?
Speaker 2tired of hearing us talk about this one yet well , too bad um , this book altered my brain chemistry forever in like so many ways , but specifically for this question it was really interesting reading about like world war ii from the perspective of vianne , or like the women who stayed home while the men left to like fight . It was so inspiring and fascinating and like a story that you just didn't realize needed to be told it's something that kind of like taken advantage of , you forget about .
Speaker 2but like these women , um , it's like a necessary perspective to like understand how much they were fighting the war themselves at home too , and like what they were doing to help the war efforts but having to also still keep up like the home and take care of like these villages that are being overrun by Nazis , and like how they're surviving in this precarious situation as to like just being women . So really loved that like new perspective .
Speaker 1it wasn't even like a new perspective , but just like bringing awareness to that perspective yeah , just like a good reminder , I think something , a perspective that kind of shifted or changed , or that I was just reminded , enlightened of , um well , how many buzzwords did I ?
Speaker 1just say they're the same thing , um , was the fact that , like we haven't ever been in a position like that where there's been a war that's been knocking on our doorstep that has affected like like us in like a day-to-day basis , but currently there are people that being that are being affected by wars . It's just like it was such like an ignorant feeling on my end , like once like yeah , so yeah , I just like makes me want to care for more of the world Absolutely , because , yeah , no one deserves to like go through that stuff .
Speaker 2No , that's such a good point . As much as it's like world war ii , but you're so right , it's like even happening today and like we're in such a privileged spot to like not even be thinking about that and having to worry about it , whereas , like , women are believing this every day . Yeah , so valid wow , great point .
Speaker 1We will be saying prayers yes , okay , if you could rewrite a male centered book or story with a female protagonist , which one , would it be , came too easy for them and , like I know , it would not have come that easy for a girl . And even there was another , there was a girl character in there . That it's definitely the book is not centered around her , but like her journey through the book , which we're only getting tidbits of , sounded so much more interesting than this in some ways . I don't know , um , but I just think maybe like the female's perspective or like that character's perspective of the girl in the book would have captivated me more . And maybe it is just like a biological thing , like I'm just not connecting with the man , um , because it wasn't like a bad book , but I just like , wanted more and like like there was depth but at the same time it just like wasn't where I wanted it . I guess I don't know if that's just a me opinion , but that's my opinion that makes total sense .
Speaker 1Yeah , it's hard to talk about it without getting into spoilers , but I guess the best way that I can put it is he had to go through a journey and a trial and it just felt like everything worked out for him . Maybe it's kind of like there wasn't as many hurdles , like like there were , I don't know . Just like , yeah , it all worked out .
Speaker 2But maybe that's like the difference between like men and women too is . It's like we think so much deeper on a lot of these things , so like we want more of that like in-depth complexity from like our characters versus like men don't necessarily not saying that all men are like that , but generically speaking , don't necessarily not saying that all men are like that , but generically speaking , don't have that kind of like constantly thinking about the complexities of other people , their emotions , things like that to where , like we would want that . So maybe that had something to do with it too , maybe , which would make it interesting as a female character .
Speaker 1Yeah , but tell me about your story .
Speaker 2So I am a big Greek mythology fan , so I would love to see a retelling of like the Iliad and the Odyssey , if the men were actually women . I think that would make it so interesting for two different reasons . I would love to see , like the juxtaposition of like the man in a female role , because like in history , everything is written by men about men from the male perspective and like how women were perceived is very much from the male gaze versus like if it was the reverse and the female would be yeah , but just like the helplessness damsel in distress or like how things are perceived that way .
Speaker 2I would love to see a man put in the female perspective and I think it would show just how ridiculous some of those like things are when you're reading it as like putting the man in there . You know what I mean . Yeah , like the flip-flop of it , um , so like part of me wants to see that and just like to like , kind of like see the ridiculousness of it .
Speaker 1That would be funny to see it in like an extreme sense . I will say , though , in a moderate sense I love getting help from Justin . Oh , yeah . I'm okay with being the damsel .
Speaker 2But I feel like there's like a difference between like getting help and like the way that a lot of these women are written so helplessly , because it's not that you're helpless , you just like help yeah , and I think that's like .
Speaker 1I just want to be taken care of exactly exactly , but you're fully capable .
Speaker 2Yeah , and I feel like a lot of these things , especially like ancient history . It's like women are fully incapable and stupid . It's like how it's written , kind of thing . So , versus , if you put a man in that perspective , it would just be funny to like I feel like it hits harder , like that stereotype , if that makes sense I agree , um , but then I would also love to see it as far as like the difference in strategizing during , like the trojan war .
Speaker 2If it was like kind of like rewritten , obviously because it'd be more of a story , uh , but like if women were the ones , like at war , like how would like the battle be different ? Or you know , like , um , the different outcomes of the many obstacles odysseus faced when trying to get home , like if versus if he was a woman , like a woman like how would he like , or she like attack those things differently and the outcome might be different . I don't know . Uh , I kind of got like a taste of this with cersei by madeline middler , um , because obviously she's a cersei , is a goddess and part of the odyssey , so you only get like her story and like her part of the bigger picture . Okay , but it was interesting comparing like that perspective to the original . So I'd love to see it like gender flipped yeah , that's very interesting that would be mine , long-winded , but I like it .
Speaker 1Okay , shifting gears into other forms of media . What's the most iconic portrayal of a woman in tv or film that resonated with you ?
Speaker 2um , there are so many , so many , so many good ones , um , but I'm I went with the first one that came to my mind because I reached recently re-watched the lord the ring series with josh , so I'm gonna say it was aon um , specifically in the third movie , return of the king .
Speaker 2Um , so essentially like she , for like people who like kind of don't know , just give a very , very high summary she's like a noblewoman from one of the lands in like the series and she's essentially told like to stay home with all the women to like take care of like the people and like the place while the men go off to war .
Speaker 2But she's like no , I want to fight . So she pretends to dress up as a man and a soldier and go and fight in this war and then , uh , she like faces , like one of like the big spirit generals , um , and uh , he essentially uh is like you know , no man can ever like defeat me . And then that's when she like takes off her helmet and reveals that she's a woman and she's like I am no man and then kills the guy . Oh , it just hits so hard . But I think what I love about it too is kind of like what we were talking about with ailyn is that it shows the complexity . Like you , throughout the movie you can tell like she's really scared and she's really like frightened and like she and like she's like did I do the right thing ? But then she does it anyway .
Speaker 2Yeah , she pushes through the fear , and so it doesn't take away from the fact that she's scared , but it adds to , like that , character growth and then the reveal and I am no man , just hits hard . What did ?
Speaker 1Josh think of that part . He loved it .
Speaker 2No , he loved the whole series . Yeah , so yeah , that that's mine , though that was just an iconic one that just , oh , got me going , and women what about you ?
Speaker 1mine's a bit more lighthearted . It's okay , because that's what . That's what makes it fun .
Speaker 1um , so I thought of like a couple , but , um , gilmore girls and new girl . So so Lorelai and Jessica Day , I feel like they're all just trying to live their lives in this world , which is hard , but they're also not like taking life too seriously and they know when to have fun . And like , specifically Lorelai , she is a strong , independent woman raising Rory on her own , but like she's so quippy and she still has fun with it , but she really just gets her stuff done and she doesn't have to be like emotional about it and she puts a good emphasis on food because food is so important absolutely to all women everywhere .
Speaker 2um , those are such good ones .
Speaker 1Yeah , and then Jessica Day I just like relate to her and like I feel like she just like wants to , not that she like wants to fit in and change herself , but she wants to like be herself and like be a part of it , like she wants to be a part of what the guys are doing and she wants to , like , show up for her friends and um , but like she's not gonna change , yeah , that she's wearing her polka dots or that she might be doing silly voices , or even if you find her annoying , well , that's just her . So I really I like both of them a lot . And then an honorable mention for the Bring it On franchise . All the love is so sassy . I just that's so funny . As a kid , I loved those movies .
Speaker 2I'm like those were my girls yes , no , I could totally see that . I love that , no those are those are really good ones . Thanks , um , but like who would be your ultimate female role model in pop culture , would you say ?
Speaker 1this was kind of hard and thinking of like role model and I'm sure there are others too , but the one that was coming to my mind was like Sadie Robertson good one , um , so she's got like such a good head on her shoulders and what I really like value in her , but she has no like she couldn't plan this . But we're around the same age and I just really like align with her values and it's neat to see like what she does and to like take inspiration from it . Um , and so , yeah , I just think she's living a good life and she's just like really sweet and down to earth and vulnerable with people . Um , so I I just yeah , I think I like her a lot and I think she's a a good role model for me . Um , and then another honorable mention the pink power ranger I love that .
Speaker 2What about you ? Um , my forever queen , julie andrews oh yeah , that's a good one . Love her . Princess diaries is like my favorite movie of all time growing up still is . It's my comfort movie , um , and so she just had like a huge impact on me from like a very young age , not to mention like mary poppins and the sound of music , although I will say sound of music was not my favorite growing up , I wasn't like one of those diehard fans . Well , it's about war , yeah , um , but there are people that really love it , like it is a classic .
Speaker 1I do . I do like singing the songs . I will say that maybe I will play that on my way home today .
Speaker 2I haven't heard them in a while . Um , but definitely mary poppins loved , but especially this movie . Um , she just is like so regal and the way she holds herself and she's so graceful . Um , and like just learning so many fun facts about her as I've grown up . She's just somebody that , like I hold in such high esteem .
Speaker 1What's your favorite fun fact ? Sorry , putting you on the spot . It's okay if you can't .
Speaker 2The song she sings in the Princess Diaries 2 is the first time that she sang like being filmed singing , since she had her botched like vocal cord surgery surgery um back in like 1997 that is a fun fact which is so wild because like she sounded so good .
Speaker 2You would have never guessed she sounded so good , yeah um , and I I feel horrible knowing , like I guess she like I don't know the full story , so they get to give context but I know that she like had to undergo like vocal cord surgery or something on those lines , um , obviously back like in 97 and um it just went horribly wrong , I guess , and so she went from having like this beautiful voice . I remember reading like I think she sung for queen elizabeth when she was 13 like had this amazing voice and then all of a sudden she like lost it because of I hope she puts out a memoir one day me too .
Speaker 2If it doesn't already exist , I should look it up . Yeah , um , but yeah , and so the fact that she's been able to like still have like such an amazing career , and the fact that she was able to sing , love it , that's love her .
Speaker 1I do think she is someone who's so elegant like she reminds me of a queen .
Speaker 2Maybe that's because of her diaries but it's just the way she holds herself .
Speaker 1Yeah , she holds herself so like , highly , but at the same time , like I feel like I could walk up to her like it's not unapproachable like , which I think is an important trait to have . Absolutely yeah , to be approachable is an important trait to have yes , she definitely out of .
Speaker 2Pop culture has probably had the biggest impact for the longest period of time .
Speaker 1For me , yeah , that's good . Okay , what's a song by a female artist that always makes you feel powerful ?
Speaker 2Uh man , I Feel Like a Woman by Shania .
Speaker 1Twain yeah , that one's so good .
Speaker 2Iconic . It's a classic , been a staple since I was a little girl . The music is just like- .
Speaker 1When you hear that beginning . It's like let's go girl , yeah , girl .
Speaker 2The music is just like that beginning . It's like let's go , girls . Or even yeah , yeah , yeah , the music is just like . It's kind of like it's fun , but also like kind of powerful and spunky . But then the lyrics are just like the epitome of girlhood , womanhood . It's just fun and it oh gets me going . I love it . What about you ?
Speaker 1um , okay , I have three . Yes , there's so many and I probably could list more , but um , the first one that came to mind was Hayley Williams on Paramore , or , with Paramore , misery Business that one is so fun to just like belt out . Yep , um . And then Britney Spears . Piece of Me that one makes me feel like .
Speaker 1Like that one makes me feel powerful . Yeah , you're a big Britney fan , that's all I can say . Well , I mean she just like . I once watched this TikTok where this girl was saying her therapist said um , to like dance to your music . Like dance to music in front of like a mirror , like conf , like sexy , confident and like like I do dance around in my house to music all the time because I do think it like helps with confidence and just making you feel good and like there's just something about like the beats of britney spears songs and just like feeling like that like pop star , like diva energy , just for a song that I can , that I think just like really does something to you . At least for me it does . And then the final one , which is kind of like a random one but holding out for a hero by Bonnie Tyler .
Speaker 2Oh my gosh , you're so right that one does get me going .
Speaker 1Oh yes , such a good one that one , I feel like I could ride like a chariot into battle . Oh yeah , it always reminds me of the original Footloose , because that's in the soundtrack . That's where I know it from , and yeah , just so good .
Speaker 2That is such a good one that one makes me think of the fan edit from the Star Wars movie . It was like the is it like I forget the name of it ? Rise of Skywalker , I think , maybe . Uh , whatever , the last one in the most recent trilogy ? Uh , with kylo ren running to save ray they like , added , edited the song . Oh , it gives me all the feels . Love , yeah , great choice . I think it's also in shrek iconic . So many things Okay , but who is a real life woman that inspired you personally ?
Speaker 1This one is also hard and it's like I feel guilty , just like saying someone like , especially someone like that like I know personally because it really is like all the women in my life like , and especially my mom , which I don't want that to like be a cop out , like it's I mean , it's not a cop out , but I don't want it to feel that way but of course her because she's been like , she has been my role model and like the biggest woman in my life for so long , woman in my life for so long . But I do think something that's interesting is that for role models , for me it tends to like shift as I get older . So sometimes it's been like a random girl in my class , like in middle school or high school . I've just really resonated with them or I've looked up to them in some way , shape or another . And then maybe it's been a friend's mom that I've been like oh , I'm getting a good perspective like from them . Or you know , even though your mom might tell you something , hearing it from someone else like , you're like , oh , yeah , so . Or like , lately , colleagues like .
Speaker 1There have definitely been some colleagues in my life that I have looked up to as role models , especially those that are just a couple years older than me , that can feel like my work mom or like a cheerleader . I feel like they're teaching me so much , um . And then to like say a name of a person , a real person I would say Taylor Lautner , Taylor Lautner's wife yeah , they're both the same , but I've been listening to their podcast , the Squeeze . Um , I listen sometimes and she just feels like very real and very vulnerable and like like she's she cares . It sounds like she just cares a lot and is really interested in mental health and creating a space where people um can share about that .
Speaker 2So that was kind of long-winded , but no those are really good ones . Um no , I totally agree with taylor too , because , too , because I've listened to a couple of hers and , yeah , she does have that just authentic feel of really caring about it and not just doing it because mental health is really popular right now kind of thing . Yeah , you're so right .
Speaker 1Thanks , what about ?
Speaker 2you ? Yeah , I'm with you . My real and true answer is the women in my family , especially my mother , is like the women in my family , especially my mother , like there's . Obviously these are the people that you grow up seeing and like , who like embody being a woman and like who you want to emulate growing up . Um , but that just kind of felt like an easy answer for me . So I'm kind of thinking outside of blood relation . So right now , personally , uh , alona mayor and elise myers are both very inspiring for me . Um , both of them are influencers .
Speaker 2Alona , uh , she just won the bronze medal yeah , she's not just an influencer , she's an olympian she won the bronze medal , uh , in rugby , uh , this past olympics , um , but I've been following her since the previous Summer Olympics An OG fan On TikTok yeah , I just think I found her because I thought she was really funny and she was posting like all the behind the scenes stuff in the Olympic Village and it was just like funny and good content .
Speaker 2But she's really had like a really amazing impact on like how I view myself and like self-confidence , because I feel like there's a lot of things and a lot of people say the same thing . So it's not necessarily that the message that she's putting out there is like new , but it's just taking the right person for it to like sink in . You know what I mean , and that's what these two women do for me . So it's like the self-confidence and like what beauty is and how you can be like strong and powerful and like obviously she's such an amazing athlete , but then she wears lipstick on the field because she's also super feminine and and like embraces that with her .
Speaker 1Yeah , I love similar to how we're talking about elin . I love that crossover .
Speaker 2Yeah , it's so great and seeing it like I've seen um different people post about like their little girls , like really like resonating with her a lot and like seeing them like start to realize and like soak in that message too , is just like really inspiring . So I'm obsessed with her . And then also elise , um , I've been following her for a very long time and she's the first person that helped me like kind of realize what representation matters like really sink in . Obviously , like you understand the concept and like you agree , and like you and everybody should feel like represented and like the media that they're consuming .
Speaker 2But again , it's just like one of those that she was the person that really like let it sink in for me , um , specifically with just like her neurodivergent stories , um , and it's not even that she talks about it in a way , um , and like her journey she kind of does , but it's not even that she talks about it in a way . And like her journey she kind of does , but it's just more like the way she tells stories , the way she communicates when she talks about like her social anxieties or stress in like such a funny way . But it's like , oh my gosh , no , that's exactly how I feel and that's exactly what I think , and like you think that you're the only one , but then seeing somebody else talk about it , you're like you think that you're the only one , but then seeing somebody else talk about it , you're like , oh my gosh , that's insane . Like I really really connected with her in like a really good way . So , yeah , just like her daily struggles , triumphs , the way that she talks about it , it's just , yeah , really hits hard .
Speaker 1They're both awesome .
Speaker 2Those are good . Those would be mine . But what is the best piece of advice you've ever received from a woman ?
Speaker 1Again , that is so hard it is .
Speaker 1Most of these come from my mom .
Speaker 1One big one is that you don't need to worry about what others think about you , because they're likely thinking about themselves .
Speaker 1And so so true thing that has always helped me in so many different circumstances , from getting ready for a presentation and knowing that like no one's thinking about my presentation , because they're thinking about remembering what to say for theirs , to just like all facets of life . You know , not in like a mean way , but we're all very self-centered people and that like it's our lives . We all think we're the main character and so you really don't need to worry about how others are like perceiving you in most situations , because they're probably thinking about themselves . And I think this is so true because we'll have girl nights and like we're all having a great time , and then afterwards it's like we all collectively text in the group and it's like , hey , I'm sorry , you thought that , yeah , and it's like I came off across this way , yeah , and it's like we all are just thinking about our own like faults , so you don't need to worry about like what others are thinking about , because they're just thinking about themselves yeah , so true and true .
Speaker 1And then another one which is super similar , but fake it till you make it kind of same thing . It's like not a single person has done this before , no one has lived life before , so no one knows what they're doing . And even if someone's done something before , you're not wrong for doing something the first time , or for making a mistake or for learning , and so just like , fake it , you know , and then if you do make a mistake , then it's a learning opportunity . It doesn't mean that , like you're bad or you're wrong .
Speaker 2So .
Speaker 1I don't know .
Speaker 2It's also like . It's like law of attraction too . Cause it's like whatever you put out is what you're getting back . So even if you're not confident , if you're faking that confidence , then you're going to like attract confidence and like the perks of being confident kind of thing too . Yeah , yeah . So those are really good ones . Thank you , um , for me at least . Again , there's so many women in my family who have like so much advice . But of course , when I'm sitting down trying to think of something for the question , yeah , all gone .
Speaker 1Oh my gosh it always happens .
Speaker 2Yeah , um , so because I just could not pull something from my memory in my brain , um , I went with my favorite quote , which is no one can make you feel inferior without your consent amen . By eleanor roosevelt . Um , this one I think about so often , um , especially since I learned it from my favorite comfort movie . This is from princess diaries . Um , but it's just like you know , like , how we're perceived is obviously like we talked about , like something that everybody really struggles with , especially as women . I feel like we're even more conscious about , like what people think of us . So this has just really become like my mantra when I'm feeling particularly self-conscious of like nobody can truly make you feel that way unless you let somebody make you feel that way yeah , I love that kind of the same thing , but worded differently .
Speaker 1My mom used to say don't give them power over your emotions or like why are you giving them power over your emotions ?
Speaker 2so it's like the same thing , but in different font and it's obviously like harder or it's easier said than done but I think , even just recognizing like , oh , I'm upset because I'm letting . Yeah exactly it's like trying to like teach yourself and remember , like let things roll off your back and like , yeah , not let people affect you because , truly like , you're the one that's letting them affect you in that way what will be will be exactly .
Speaker 2This was so good this was a good one . Yeah , I'm excited to talk about more empowering women for our book later if we'll be able to talk , I'll probably be crying the whole time .
Speaker 1True , I'm literally talking about . The nightingale earlier made me tear up . I don't know if you noticed but , yeah , I was like , okay , pull it together no , I'm only like .
Speaker 2I think I've read through like six chapters so far and it's already like really I have to go get it , it's not this . Well , it is sad , but it's not like like that hard-hitting , like emotional sad , but it's just intent and so I can only imagine , like as we go on when you're like connected to the story of the characters , exactly how it's gonna
Borrows & Returns
Speaker 2hit .
Speaker 1Well , speaking of reading and how far along you are , what are your borrows and returns ?
Speaker 2Not much from me currently for borrows . It's the Women by Kristen Hanna . And then I am jumping back in my book that's been sitting on my nightstand for a very long time untouched the adhd for smart ass women by tracy atsuka . Um , just again , this is one of those you pick up and read every once in a while , but I haven't touched it . So I'm gonna try to like pick it up and at least read like a paragraph or two here and there and try to , you know , get through it , because I think it does have some good like insights and tips and stuff , um , that I'd like to pull , but I just have to make the time to do it . Yeah , um , and then I have no returns .
Speaker 1I have not been reading and they'll probably be scarce for me here for the next couple months I know , until after may and after june for you the the second half of the year we're really gonna ramp oh yeah , I mean second half of the year .
Speaker 2I feel like , like we're going to be going in .
Speaker 1Cruising . So for my returns I have Red Rising by Pierce Brown , which I touched on . So I would give it like a 3.5 stars . It was a well-written , like sci-fi fantasy book . It had some really great elements . I just personally wasn't as captivated or connected to it as some other or as some other books have made me feel um , but it wasn't a bad book at all . So even though I'm reading it like in the middle , it's just because I , for me personally , I've read ones that have connected more um , but I'd still recommend people reading it because it was really . It was like an interesting , like concept and story . And then obviously I'm going to be borrowing the women and reading that for book club . And then I'm also doing first time caller by bk borson as an audiobook . So that's like interesting , a little light-hearted romance , yeah . So I think that'll be fun . I was listening to it on the way here and , um , I'm enjoying the voice actors because that make or breaks an audiobook for me . So that's good , I'm excited .
Speaker 2New author . Be curious to hear your thoughts on it .
Speaker 1I really like the cover to it . Well , you wouldn't , because it's cartoon people .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 1But I just like the colors and yeah , oh fun . I'll be excited to hear your thoughts when it becomes a return and we'll be excited to hear everyone's thoughts when they join our fable club and participate with us , with the women .
